A taxi from Mirissa to Sigiriya is 295 km and about 6 hours 20 minutes, from the palm-lined bay on the south coast to the rock fortress in the middle of the island, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. On the map it looks like a slow crawl across the country. In practice most of it is on expressway, and the only real choice is how early you are willing to leave. People make this trip for two reasons: they began their holiday on the beach and are now heading north for the ancient cities, or the south-west monsoon has reached Mirissa and they are moving to the side of the island that is dry. The driver picks up anywhere in Mirissa, from the beach road and Coconut Tree Hill to the guesthouses on the hill behind the harbour.

Journey details

From Mirissa the car follows the coast road briefly and then turns inland to join the Southern Expressway near Matara. From there it is a long, straight run north, past Galle and inland of the west-coast resorts, to the edge of Colombo, where the Outer Circular Expressway takes you round the east of the city without entering it. North of the capital the driver heads for Kurunegala, on the Central Expressway section where it helps, and then follows the A6 through Galewela to Dambulla. The final stretch leaves the A6 at Inamaluwa for the road into Sigiriya. Allow about 6 hours 20 minutes for the 295 km without stops. With a lunch break and a coffee stop, most people are on the road for seven and a half hours, a little more with the Dambulla cave temple.

The road

The first and last few kilometres are the slowest per kilometre: the A2 through Mirissa and towards Matara is a narrow coast road shared with buses, scooters and fish lorries, and the road from Dambulla into Sigiriya is narrow, unlit and crossed by elephants after dusk. Everything in between is predictable. The Southern Expressway is the calmest road in the country, with service areas where the driver will suggest a break about every two hours. North of Colombo the roads to Kurunegala pass through a run of busy towns, and Kurunegala centre is congested at lunchtime, which is a good reason to stop for lunch before or after it rather than in it. The A6 is a trunk road with heavy lorries, but straight and well surfaced. Many Sigiriya lodges have no address a navigation app can find, so send the hotel name and a pin on WhatsApp.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Over six hours, the deciding factor is room to stretch. For one or two people the economy sedan does the job, but most couples who have spent a week or two on the beach are carrying more than they arrived with, and the comfort sedan, with space for four bags, makes the day noticeably easier. Families and groups should book the Comfort van (6 seats) or, from seven passengers, the 8-seat van. If you are carrying a surfboard or diving gear from Mirissa, tell us when you book so we send a vehicle it fits in. Child seats are free on request, and with a long drive ahead it is worth packing snacks, water and a charger in a bag you keep at your feet.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no train to Sigiriya and no direct bus. The public option is a train or bus from Matara or Weligama to Colombo, a bus on to Dambulla, and a local bus or tuk-tuk to Sigiriya: possible in a day for a backpacker, exhausting with suitcases. Some people prefer to cross the island in two hops, spending a night in Kandy or on the way, and that works if you want a stop anyway. A route via Ella and the east is sometimes suggested, but it is much longer and only makes sense as part of a multi-day tour. For getting from the south coast to the cultural triangle in one day, the private taxi through Colombo’s ring road is the direct option.

Best time to travel this route

Start at 06:00 or 06:30. You reach the expressway before the coast road wakes up, pass Colombo before the late-morning traffic, and arrive in Sigiriya in the middle of the afternoon with time to rest before an evening walk or an early night ahead of the climb at opening time. Do not plan this trip on the morning of a whale-watching tour: the boats return around midday, too late for a comfortable arrival in daylight. The timing of the seasons suits the move: Mirissa is at its best from about November to April, and from May to September, when the south-west monsoon reaches the coast, the cultural triangle is dry. Trips with a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, and from 15 December to 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies.

How long is the drive from Mirissa to Sigiriya?

About 6 hours 20 minutes for 295 km without stops. With lunch and short breaks, plan on about seven and a half hours.

Can we do it in one day, or should we stop overnight?

One day is comfortable with an early start, because most of the road is expressway. If you would rather stop, a night in Kandy is the usual choice; we can book the two legs separately.

Where do we stop for lunch?

The driver will suggest a clean rice and curry place on the road towards Kurunegala, or a service area on the expressway if you prefer something quick. Stops are possible whenever you ask.

Can we visit the Dambulla cave temple before Sigiriya?

Yes, it is right on the route about half an hour before you arrive. Allow an hour or so for the climb. Mention it when you book so the driver plans the timing.

Will we see elephants on the road?

Possibly, on the last stretch near Sigiriya, especially at dusk. It is one reason we recommend arriving in daylight.

How do we pay, and can we cancel?

The full price is paid online by card when you book; nothing is due to the driver. On the last screen you can choose 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, for a 10% higher price. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.
