A taxi from Negombo to Hikkaduwa is 145 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes, door to door in a private car with an English-speaking driver, at a fixed price per vehicle with the expressway tolls included. Negombo is where many trips start, because it is the closest beach town to Colombo airport and an easy place to spend the first night. Hikkaduwa is where many of those trips really begin: a long, lively strip of surf schools, reef, turtles feeding in the shallows and guesthouses along the railway line. The transfer between the two is short enough to do after a lazy breakfast and still have the afternoon in the water.

Journey details
The driver collects you from your hotel in Negombo, whether it is on the beach road at Ethukala or in the town, and joins the E03 at Katunayake. The expressway runs south past the Negombo lagoon and the wetlands towards Colombo, and at Kerawalapitiya the route switches onto the E02 Outer Circular Expressway, which loops around the city through Kadawatha and Kaduwela. At Kottawa you join the E01 Southern Expressway and follow it through inland green country for about an hour, leaving at the Baddegama interchange. From there a road of about fifteen kilometres runs down through villages and cinnamon gardens to the coast, and you enter Hikkaduwa on the A2. Without stops, the whole run takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. If you would rather see the sea all the way, the driver can take the old coast road from Colombo through Kalutara, Bentota and Kosgoda, with its turtle hatcheries; it is much slower, so ask when you book and allow most of the day.
The road
Two stretches decide the timing. The first is getting out of Negombo, where the main road through town and over the lagoon bridge fills up between about 07:30 and 09:00 on weekdays. The second is Hikkaduwa itself. The town is one long main street with the railway line between the road and the beach, so level crossings close for every passing train, and most seaside guesthouses are reached by turning across the traffic into a lane barely wider than the car. Some have no vehicle access for the last few metres. Give us the name of your guesthouse, not just the beach, and the driver will stop where the walk is shortest. The expressways in between are fast and calm, with service areas for a break. North of town, at Telwatta, the road passes the memorial to the 2004 tsunami; drivers will point it out if you ask.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Hikkaduwa draws surfers, divers and families, and the right car depends on what you carry. For a couple with two suitcases, the comfort sedan (four passengers, four bags) is the sensible choice; the economy sedan, at the lowest price on this page, is fine for up to three people travelling light. If you bring surfboards or a dive bag, book the Comfort van (6 seats): boards lie flat inside with seats folded instead of being wedged across a sedan, and nothing goes on the roof. Families of five or six fit the same van comfortably, and groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request, and the air conditioning is welcome after a night in a hot Negombo room.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Hikkaduwa is on the coastal railway, but Negombo is on a different branch, so the train means riding into Colombo Fort, changing and taking a southbound train, which can be packed on weekends and has little space for boards or big cases. Buses also run via Colombo, with a change and a wait. Ride-hailing cars exist in Negombo, but drivers often refuse a long trip south and the fare is not fixed before you leave. A tuk-tuk is not realistic for 145 km. If you arrive in the morning on an overnight flight, you could skip Negombo altogether and take the direct transfer from the airport to Hikkaduwa, which has its own page with flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting.
Best time to travel this route
Hikkaduwa's season runs from about November to April, when the sea is flat enough for snorkelling on the reef and the surf breaks work for beginners and intermediates alike. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings swell, wind and showers, the sea becomes rough and some places close, although the expressway is unaffected. Leave Negombo around 09:00 to miss the local rush and you will be in Hikkaduwa before 12:00. Friday evenings and long weekends fill the Southern Expressway with Colombo families, so travel earlier on those days. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, the 15 December to 15 January high season adds 10%, and booking more than 14 days in advance takes 5% off.

How long is the drive from Negombo to Hikkaduwa?
About 2 hours 30 minutes for the 145 km on the expressways. The old coast road through Bentota takes far longer and only makes sense if you want stops along the sea.
Can I bring my surfboard?
Yes. Tell us how many boards when you book. In the Comfort van (6 seats) they travel flat inside the vehicle, which protects the fins and keeps them off the roof.
Can we stop at a turtle hatchery?
Yes, but the hatcheries at Kosgoda are on the coast road, not the expressway, so it means taking the slower route. Ask when you book and we will plan it with you.
Our guesthouse is down a small lane. Can the car reach it?
Usually yes, or within a few metres. Give us the exact name and the driver will choose the best approach; he can help carry bags along the last stretch.
Can you pick us up at the airport instead of Negombo?
Yes. Book the airport to Hikkaduwa transfer instead: the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and tracks your flight.
How do we pay?
Pay the full price online by card when you book, and there is nothing to give the driver. Or pay 50% online and the rest in cash on the day, which costs 10% more. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
Car hire with driver, for the whole trip
