A private taxi from Tissamaharama to Ella covers about 110 km in about two and a half hours, at a fixed price per vehicle confirmed before you set off. Most people take it straight after a Yala safari: back at the hotel by late morning, shower, pack, and up into the hills in time for the afternoon. The trip runs the opposite way to most hill-country journeys, starting in the heat of the dry zone and finishing on the long climb through the Ella Gap, where the temperature drops with every bend and the view opens over the plains you have just crossed.

Journey details
Leaving Tissa, the driver usually takes the A2 north through Lunugamvehera and Thanamalvila, a quiet, fast road through scrub and paddy, or the road through Kataragama and Buttala if you want to see the Kataragama temple complex on the way. Both meet at Wellawaya, at the foot of the hills. From there the A23 climbs through the Ella Gap past Ravana Falls into Ella village. About 110 km and about two and a half hours without stops. A pause at Kataragama or a short detour to the Buduruwagala rock carvings near Wellawaya adds around an hour.
The road
The lowland part is easy driving but not empty: tractors, cattle and buffalo on the road, and herds of goats near the villages. Around Lunugamvehera the road runs close to wild country, and elephants are sometimes seen beside it, more often towards evening. The climb from Wellawaya to Ella is the real work. It gains around 800 metres in a short distance, with tight hairpins, blind corners and buses descending fast. Heavy vehicles climb slowly and passing places are few, so the last 25 km can take most of an hour. The cloud often comes down on the upper bends in the afternoon, and the road is slippery after rain. Ella’s main street is congested late in the day, and many guesthouses sit up steep lanes the driver will climb as far as he safely can.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Comfort sedan
After a dawn safari most people want to sleep in the car, and that is where the comfort sedan or a van pays off over the economy sedan: reclining room, a quieter cabin, and space for dusty bags and camera gear without crowding the seats. The economy sedan is fine for up to three light travellers. Families of four to six take the 6-seat van, and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Keep a warm layer handy: you leave Tissa in the heat, and Ella can be cool in the late afternoon, especially from November to February.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
No train serves Tissa, and the nearest railway station on the south line, Beliatta, is in the wrong direction. Public buses run to Wellawaya, sometimes via Kataragama, and from Wellawaya up to Ella, with a change and a long, hot wait in between. With luggage after a safari, that is a hard afternoon. App taxis are rare in Tissa, and a tuk-tuk up the Ella Gap is slow and exposed in the rain. If you are coming from Yala and also want to visit Udawalawe, that is a separate, longer leg and best kept as its own transfer.
Best time to travel this route
If you did the dawn safari, a pickup around 11:00 or 12:00 at your Tissa hotel works well: you climb the Ella Gap in the early afternoon and arrive with time for sunset at Little Adam’s Peak or the Nine Arch Bridge. If you did the afternoon safari the day before, leave after breakfast to beat the cloud on the climb. The Uva hills above Wellawaya are wettest from October to January, when downpours can slow the last stretch. Departures before 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, as do arrivals after 22:00. Yala Block 1 usually closes for some weeks between September and mid October.
