Most people take it to reach Yala National Park, either for an afternoon safari the same day or a dawn drive the next morning. Tissa sits on the edge of the dry zone, and the trip takes you from the humid palm coast of the south to wide, open scrubland with lakes full of birds. It is short enough to leave Mirissa after breakfast and still be at the park gate for the afternoon jeeps.

Journey details

From Mirissa the driver heads east along the coast to Matara, then usually joins the Southern Expressway, the E01, which runs inland to its eastern end near Hambantota. From there the road continues east past lagoons and paddy to Tissa. Tolls are included in the fixed price. The alternative is the A2 along the coast through Dikwella, Tangalle and Ambalantota, slower but with sea views and the option of stopping. About 100 km and about two hours without stops. The car can drop you at your hotel, at a safari camp near Kirinda or on the Yala road, or directly at your jeep operator if you are going straight into the park.

The road

The first test is Matara, which is congested at school times and in the late afternoon. Once on the expressway, the drive is easy and quick, with fuel and rest stops at the interchanges. The final stretch from Hambantota to Tissa is flat and straight, past Bundala National Park and its salt pans and lagoons; it is quiet but has cattle on the road and, towards evening, the occasional elephant near the scrubland edges. In Tissa, most safari hotels are around the Tissa Wewa lake or along the road towards Kirinda and the Palatupana gate. If you are going directly to a jeep, give the driver the operator’s name and location in advance so he can find the meeting point without searching.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Comfort sedan

For a couple or up to three passengers travelling light, the economy sedan is enough for two hours on good roads. The comfort sedan adds space for four or for larger cases. If you are dropping straight into a safari, think about where the luggage goes: in a van it stays well out of sight in the back, which is more comfortable if the car waits during the safari as an arranged stop. The 6-seat van suits families of four to six, the 8-seat van groups of seven or eight. Child seats are free on request, and useful for young children on safari days that start early and end late.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no railway to Tissa: the coastal line ends at Beliatta, about halfway along. Buses run along the A2 from Matara to Tissa, often with a change at Hambantota or Tangalle; they are cheap but slow, crowded and rarely fit a safari start time. App taxis can be found in Mirissa but may not accept a long trip to Tissa, and returning drivers are not guaranteed. A tuk-tuk is slow and cannot use the expressway, and the heat on the last stretch is intense. If you want to combine Tissa with Udawalawe or Ella, it is worth booking each leg separately to keep the timing flexible.

Best time to travel this route

For an afternoon Yala safari, which usually starts around 14:30, leave Mirissa at 09:00 or 10:00: you reach Tissa with time to check in and eat. For the dawn safari, around 05:30, arrive the day before; a pre-dawn departure from Mirissa would fall in the night surcharge window (15% for pickups or arrivals between 22:00 and 05:00). Yala Block 1 usually closes for several weeks from September to mid October, so check before you plan. December to March is peak season on the south coast and in Yala; a 10% high-season rate applies from 15 December to 15 January.
