Many trips to Sri Lanka begin with a night in Negombo, close to the airport, and a taxi to Kandy the next morning. It is a sensible start: you land, sleep by the sea, and take the first inland leg rested and in daylight. The taxi from Negombo to Kandy covers about 115 km in about two hours thirty-five minutes, and it takes you from the coast to the hill capital at around 500 metres without going anywhere near central Colombo.

Journey details

The road heads inland from Negombo on smaller roads through coconut country towards Mirigama. From there drivers take one of two lines. One follows the E04 Central Expressway north towards Kurunegala, then the Kurunegala road into Kandy from the north through Katugastota. The other joins the A1 Colombo to Kandy road and runs through Warakapola, Kegalle and Mawanella, then up the Kadugannawa pass to Peradeniya and Kandy. They come out at a similar distance and time, about 115 km and two and a half hours or a little more, and the driver picks on the day. If you want to stop at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, it is on the A1 line near Kegalle, and that decides the route.

The road

The first half hour out of Negombo is on minor roads through small towns; they are narrow but rarely jammed early in the day. On the A1 line, the slow points are the centres of Kegalle and Mawanella and the Kadugannawa pass, where the road climbs in bends above the valley with lorries crawling uphill. Near the top stands Dawson Tower, the memorial to the engineer who built the original road, and Bible Rock is visible across the valley. On the expressway line, the fast section ends near Kurunegala and the road into Kandy is a two-lane climb through villages. Both lines meet the same last obstacle: the bridges and junctions around Kandy, busy from about 16:30 on weekdays, and the one-way system around the lake.

Recommended vehicle for this route

This is usually the first transfer of the trip, which means every bag you brought is in the car. The economy sedan takes three passengers, but its boot is smaller than a European car’s, so two people with two large cases and cabin bags are better off in the comfort sedan. Families of four or five fit well in the 6-seat van, with the luggage behind the seats rather than on laps, and groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. The drive is short and the bends at Kadugannawa brief, so nobody needs to size up for the road itself.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no direct train from Negombo to Kandy. Negombo is on the coastal line into Colombo, so you would ride south to Colombo Fort, change, and take the Kandy train from there: a scenic ride, but most of a day with luggage on your first morning. Buses run inland with changes and little room for suitcases. If you would rather skip the night by the sea, the airport transfer to Kandy goes straight from arrivals. And if Kandy is the first stop of a longer loop through Sigiriya and the hills, car hire with driver by the day may cover the whole week in one booking.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Negombo after breakfast, around 08:00 or 09:00, and you are in Kandy before lunch with the afternoon free for the lake and the Temple of the Tooth. With a stop at Pinnawala, where the elephants are taken to the river at set times of day, plan the departure around that and allow about four hours in all. Try to arrive in Kandy before 16:30, when the weekday evening traffic starts. During the Esala Perahera, in July or August, the centre of Kandy closes in the evenings for the processions, so aim to reach your hotel earlier in the day. If you land late and want to go straight on, pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge.

How far is Negombo to Kandy, and how long does the taxi take?

About 115 km and about two hours thirty-five minutes without stops. With Pinnawala on the way, allow around four hours.

Does the taxi go through Colombo?

No. From Negombo the road goes inland towards Mirigama, then either up the E04 towards Kurunegala or along the A1 through Kegalle. Central Colombo is well to the south.

Can we stop at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage?

Yes, it is near Kegalle on the A1 line. Tell us on WhatsApp once you have booked and the driver times the departure so you arrive when the elephants go down to the river.

We land late. Should we go straight to Kandy?

Usually no. A night in Negombo and a morning taxi gives you the drive in daylight and a proper arrival in Kandy. If you do go straight on, the night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00.

Can you pick us up from any hotel in Negombo?

Yes, from the beach hotels, the town centre or guesthouses inland. The driver waits 15 minutes free of charge at pickup, and the fixed price per vehicle includes fuel, tolls, parking and the driver.

How do we pay, and can we cancel?

The full price by card online, confirmed on WhatsApp, and nothing to pay the driver when you reach Kandy; or pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, for 10% more. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
