West on the A2 past Hambantota to the Beliatta interchange, then the E01 and E03 north to the terminal. Two hundred and sixty-five kilometres, four and a half hours, tolls included. For a 01:30 flight the pickup falls around 17:30; for a 13:00 departure, around 05:00, which is the same hour as a safari and cannot be both. A morning safari and a same-day flight only work with a departure after about 19:00, and even then the margin is thinner than it looks.

The stretch from Tissa west to Lunugamvehera runs along open country and elephants are on and beside the road at dawn, which is precisely when an early departure passes through. This is routine rather than exceptional, and drivers who work the route slow down at first light and do not overtake into blind bends; a bull standing in the carriageway at half past five is a real possibility. Peacocks and buffalo use the road as freely. Beyond Hambantota the A2 becomes a wide, fast and strangely empty road built alongside the port and airport developments, and it is one of the quicker ordinary roads in the country, which is what makes the overall figure hold.

Four and a half hours, mostly flat and fast, so the choice is comfort and space rather than capability. The comfort sedan for up to four with luggage, the comfort van for five or six. The point specific to a departure from Tissa is dust: bags that have been in an open jeep for two mornings come back covered in it, and if you are going straight from a safari to a flight it is worth allowing the twenty minutes to repack at the hotel rather than doing it at the check-in desk. Our drivers will wait; it is far less costly than the alternative.

There is no train to Tissamaharama and no useful bus without a change and most of a day. This is a road journey in both directions. The genuine alternative is not a different mode but a different plan: an overnight stop at Tangalle or Mirissa on the way to the airport turns a long final day into a short one and costs little more, since a two-leg transfer is priced as two transfers rather than as a day hire. For anyone with a morning safari and an afternoon flight, it is the arrangement we would suggest first.

Leave in daylight where you can, for the elephants on the first hour. Night departures are quicker on the road and attract a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00, but they mean crossing the Lunugamvehera stretch in the dark, which we take slowly. February to July is the strongest window for Yala, and Block 1 usually closes from early September to mid-October; if your trip falls in those weeks the safari will not happen whatever the transfer does. The north-east monsoon brings rain from November into January and can slow the A2 briefly, though rarely by more than twenty minutes.
