A taxi from Tissamaharama to Galle is about 140 km and about 2 hours 25 minutes via the Southern Expressway, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, expressway tolls included. Tissamaharama is the gateway to Yala, so most people book this trip for the same day as a morning safari: back at the hotel by late morning, a shower and lunch, then west along the coast to Galle in time for sunset on the fort ramparts. The pickup is at your Tissa hotel, not the park gate, so you are not handing your bags between jeeps and cars in the dust.

Journey details

From Tissamaharama the driver heads west past the edge of Bundala National Park and the salt pans towards Hambantota, where the car joins the Southern Expressway. The expressway runs west, inland of the coast, past Matara and Weligama, to the Galle interchange; from there it is a short drive into the town and the fort. This is the quick way, about 2 hours 25 minutes without stops. The alternative is the A2 coast road through Ambalantota, Tangalle, Dickwella, Matara and Weligama, which takes well over an hour longer but stays close to the sea and passes the Hummanaya blowhole near Dickwella, the Dondra Head lighthouse at the island’s southern tip, and the stilt fishermen between Weligama and Galle. Tell us when you book which you prefer; by default the driver takes the expressway.

The road

The road out of Tissa crosses flat, dry country with lagoons and paddy fields, and peacocks, water buffalo and the odd monitor lizard on the verge. Wild elephants live in the scrub around Yala and Bundala and sometimes cross the roads towards the park after dusk, which is one more reason to make this trip in daylight. The Hambantota area has wide new roads and little traffic. The expressway is fenced and quiet, with a 100 km/h limit. If you take the coast road instead, expect a slow, busy A2 through every town, with fish markets, buses and tuk-tuks, and congestion in Matara town centre. At the Galle end, the drive into the fort passes the cricket stadium and the bus station, the busiest corner of the town.

Recommended vehicle for this route

After a dawn start and a dusty safari, most people want to sit back and doze, so space counts for more than the short distance suggests. The economy sedan suits up to three passengers with light luggage. The comfort sedan, with four seats and room for four bags, is the better choice for a couple carrying camera bags and suitcases. Families of four or more should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van; vans also make it easy to keep a cool box and binoculars in the cabin. If your lodge is outside Tissa, towards the park gate, give us its exact name when booking. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no railway at Tissamaharama. The southern line now runs beyond Matara to Beliatta, near Tangalle, so a bus or tuk-tuk to Beliatta and the coastal train to Galle is possible, but it is slow and depends on timetables that rarely fit a post-safari afternoon. Direct buses along the A2 are cheap but stop in every town and take several hours. Many jeep drivers in Tissa also offer onward rides; agree the price, the vehicle and the luggage space before you set off. A pre-booked taxi gives you a fixed price, a known vehicle with air conditioning, and a driver who will wait while you check out.

Best time to travel this route

The easy plan is a morning safari in Yala, back to the hotel by late morning, and a pickup around 13:00 or 14:00. You reach Galle around 16:00, in time to check in and walk the ramparts for sunset. Avoid leaving after about 16:30 if you can: the coastal roads around Tissa are better driven in daylight because of wildlife. Yala usually closes for several weeks from around September for its annual dry-season break, so check the park dates when you plan. The south coast is calmest from about November to April. Travel between 15 December and 15 January carries a 10% high-season rate, and any pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%.
