A taxi from Trincomalee to Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake covers about 250 km in about five hours, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, from your hotel in Trincomalee or Uppuveli to the departures entrance. On this trip the only thing that really matters is the flight, and the question everyone asks is when to leave. The short answer: plan to be at the airport three hours before an international departure, add five hours of driving and a margin for traffic and a meal, and work backwards.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start
The price covers the journey between Trincomalee and Colombo Airport (CMB). At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Trincomalee, the price stays the same.
You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.
Journey details
The driver collects you at your hotel and leaves Trincomalee on the A6, around China Bay and through Thambalagamuwa and Kantale, then across the dry zone to Habarana. From Habarana the A6 continues south-west to Dambulla and Kurunegala, where the Central Expressway takes over for a fast run towards the west coast, and the last stretch leads through Minuwangoda to Katunayake and the airport. The route stays well away from Colombo city. A lunch stop in Habarana or Dambulla is the usual pause, roughly halfway. Allow five hours of driving and add at least an hour of margin: a slow market day in Kurunegala or a lorry on the A6 can cost twenty minutes. If you would rather not drive on the day of your flight, spend the last night in Negombo, ten minutes from the airport.
The road
The first half is the quietest: the A6 from Trincomalee to Habarana is long and straight with little traffic, although buses overtake fast and elephants are about in the forest stretch near Kantale and Habarana, especially early in the morning and at dusk. Drivers keep their speed down there and never stop for elephants begging at the roadside. Traffic builds from Dambulla, with lorries around the vegetable market, and Kurunegala’s one-way system around the clock tower is the main bottleneck on the whole trip. From there the expressway is quick and tolled, toll included. The final approach to Katunayake through Minuwangoda is normally easy, though the airport road itself can back up at the security checkpoint when several long-haul flights depart together.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Comfort van
You will have your full luggage, possibly with souvenirs added, so plan the car on bags as much as on people. The economy sedan suits two people with two large cases. Couples with more luggage, or anyone who wants to rest before a long flight, are better off in the comfort sedan. Families of four or more should take the 6-seat comfort van, which keeps the bags out of the cabin; groups of seven or eight, the 8-seat van. Diving gear and boards travel best in a van. Child seats are free on request, and a late-night pickup in a spacious car gives children a chance to sleep before the airport.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
A train runs from Trincomalee towards Colombo, but it goes to Colombo Fort, not the airport, and the journey takes most of a day, so you would need a second transfer north to Katunayake. Buses to Colombo are long, hot and crowded, and finding the right connection to the airport with luggage is not something to gamble a flight on. Ride-hailing apps are rarely available in Trincomalee for a trip like this. For a flight, a fixed-time private car is the dependable option.
Best time to travel this route
For a flight around midday, the drive would have to start before dawn, inside the night window, so most travellers move to Negombo the day before. For an evening departure around 20:00, leave Trincomalee by about 10:00. For the many flights that leave around midnight or later, a mid-afternoon pickup brings you to the airport in good time. Note that a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%. From October to January the north-east monsoon can bring heavy rain to the Trincomalee end; add margin then. The 15 December to 15 January high season adds 10%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long does it take to drive from Trincomalee to the airport?
About 250 km and about five hours without stops. Add a lunch stop and a margin of at least an hour before your check-in time.
What time should we leave Trincomalee for our flight?
Work back from your departure: three hours at the airport for an international flight, five hours of driving and an hour of margin. For a 20:00 flight, that means leaving around 10:00.
Does the taxi go through Colombo?
No. It goes via Habarana, Dambulla and Kurunegala and reaches Katunayake from the north-east, without entering the city.
Can we pick up from Nilaveli?
Yes. Nilaveli is listed as a separate departure point in the booking form, and the price shown there is the one for Nilaveli.
Is there a train from Trincomalee to the airport?
No. Trains go to Colombo Fort and take most of a day, so you would still need a transfer to Katunayake.
