A taxi from Colombo Airport to Mount Lavinia covers 45 km in about 55 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle, with the driver waiting for you in the arrivals hall. Mount Lavinia is Colombo’s beach: a strip of sand south of the city, with the old colonial governor’s mansion on its headland, seafood restaurants on the beach itself and the coastal railway running right along the shore. Many travellers choose it for their first night rather than the city centre, because after a long flight it is quieter, it has a sea breeze, and it still puts you on the right side of Colombo for heading south the next morning. This page covers any address in Mount Lavinia and the neighbouring part of Dehiwala.

Journey details
Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, north of Colombo, and Mount Lavinia is on the far, southern side of the city, so the trip crosses the whole capital. The first part is the E03 Airport Expressway, a fast, fenced motorway from the terminal to the Kelani river at Peliyagoda. From there the driver chooses between the inland roads, such as Baseline Road towards Dehiwala, and the seafront: Marine Drive runs along the coast past Kollupitiya and Wellawatte, then the Galle Road takes you through Dehiwala into Mount Lavinia. At night, when most long-haul flights land, the city is empty and the whole trip takes about 55 minutes. In the daytime the driver picks whichever side of the city is moving, using live traffic, and the time depends more on Colombo than on the distance. Tolls and parking are included in the price shown.
The road
The expressway never gives trouble; the city does. Galle Road through Wellawatte and Dehiwala is one of the busiest streets in Colombo, with buses stopping in the outer lane and tuk-tuks filling every gap, and it is slow between about 07:30 and 09:30 and again from 16:30 to 19:00. Marine Drive is usually the quicker way south, but it can close or jam when there is an event around Galle Face. In Mount Lavinia itself, most hotels and guesthouses are on short lanes running west from the Galle Road towards the beach and the railway line. Some of these lanes cross the tracks at level crossings, and when a train is due the barrier comes down for a few minutes, which is the one delay nobody can drive around. The headland and the beach hotels are reached by a narrow road that climbs from the Galle Road, and the driver will take you to the entrance.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For a short transfer, the choice comes down to luggage, not comfort. The economy sedan takes three passengers with three bags and is the right car for a couple or a solo traveller. Sri Lankan sedans have smaller boots than many visitors expect, so four people with four checked cases need the comfort sedan, which seats four with room for four bags. Families of five or six, or anyone arriving with golf clubs, a pram and a stack of cases, should book the Comfort van (6 seats); groups of seven or eight, the 8-seat van. Child seats are free if you ask when you book, and they are fitted before the driver comes into the terminal, so you do not wait in the car park while it happens.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Ride-hailing apps work at the airport and in Colombo, and for a single traveller with a backpack arriving in daylight they are a reasonable choice. With checked luggage, at two in the morning, after twelve hours in the air, most people would rather not stand in the pickup zone matching number plates. The airport bus goes to the Pettah transport hub in central Colombo, and from there you would need a second bus, a tuk-tuk or the coastal train to Mount Lavinia station: cheap, but three legs with your bags. A pre-booked car is the only option where the price is fixed before you land, the driver is already in the arrivals hall holding your name, and the journey ends at your hotel door.
Best time to travel this route
You do not choose your landing time, but it decides the drive. Night arrivals, which include many flights from Europe and the Gulf, have the clearest roads and come closest to the 55 minutes; a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15% to the price. Morning arrivals between about 07:30 and 09:30 meet the city at its busiest, and late afternoon is nearly as slow. Weather barely affects the expressway, but south-west monsoon downpours from May to September can flood low streets in Colombo for an hour or two. The sea at Mount Lavinia is at its calmest from December to April; outside those months, enjoy the beach and the sunsets from the sand rather than in the water.

How much is a taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Mount Lavinia?
A private taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Mount Lavinia costs $35 (LKR 11,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $39 (LKR 12,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $46 (LKR 14,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $55 (LKR 17,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 45 km journey, about 55 min of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How long does the drive take?
It is 45 km and about 55 minutes at night or outside the rush hours. In the morning and evening peaks the city part takes longer, because the trip crosses the whole of Colombo from north to south.
Where will the driver meet me?
In the arrivals hall, holding a board with your name. We track your flight, and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free, so a slow immigration queue or a late bag is not a problem.
Is Mount Lavinia a good place to stay on the first night?
For many people, yes. It is calmer than central Colombo, it is on the beach, and it is already on the south side of the city, so the next morning you are close to the Southern Expressway for Galle, Bentota or Mirissa.
Can we stop at a cash machine or buy a SIM card?
Both are available in the arrivals hall before you leave the terminal, and the driver will wait while you sort them out. If you want a stop on the way, for a supermarket for example, mention it when you book or tell the driver.
Do you also go from Mount Lavinia back to the airport?
Yes. Book it as a separate trip, giving your flight time. For a departure, plan on more time than for an arrival, because you cannot choose to cross Colombo at night.
How do we pay?
You pay the full price online by card when you book, and there is nothing to pay the driver. On the last screen you can choose to pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver instead, for a price 10% higher. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
